Pyrgos Santorini: Pyrgos is a mountainous village. It has being built on a hill which offers a full 360 panoramic view of the island.
It is situated 7.5 km south-east of Fira. It has a population of 500 inhabitants.
Until the early 1800, it was the capital of the island. The small traditional houses of Pyrgos are built around a Venetian castle and the small streets follow the shape of the hill.
You can visit the church of Theotokaki (10th c.) with its beautiful frescoes and old icons, the churches of Agia Theodosia, Agia Triada, Metamorphosi tou Sotira (Transfiguration of the Saviour) (1537-1650), Agios Nikolaos, Eisodia tis Theotokou (Presentation of the Virgin Mary) (1650-1664) and the Archangel Michael (1690).
At 4 km of Pyrgos one can also admire the monastery of Prophitis Ilias, the most famous of the island, where a small collection of ethnographic material and old icons is exhibited.(put an internal link).
